"Alfresco" simply means eating and living outdoors. The idea behind the business is that you should not need a big garden, a big budget or a landscape designer to do it — you need the right handful of things, in the right order.

What we believe

• Every garden has potential, no matter how small. Most small gardens are underused rather than too small.
• Safety comes first where there are children and pets. That shapes what we recommend around water, fire and power.
• Buy less, better. One storage bench that lasts ten years beats three that do not.
• Say when something is not worth it. Plenty of garden gadgets are not, and we would rather tell you.

How the site earns its keep
