A hot tub is the most-used thing in a lot of small gardens and the most regretted in others. The difference is almost never the tub. It is whether the base, the power and the cover were sorted out before it arrived.

Before you buy a hot tub
- The base. A filled tub with people in it is a very heavy, concentrated load. It needs a level, load-bearing base - reinforced decking, a concrete pad or proper slabs. Not lawn, and not old paving that has moved.
- The power. Inflatable tubs run from a standard outdoor RCD socket. Rigid tubs usually need a dedicated supply installed by an electrician.
- Access. Measure the side return and the gate before you order. This is the thing people discover on delivery day.
- The cover. The single biggest factor in running cost. A good insulated cover is not an accessory.
- Winter. Decide now whether you will run it year-round or drain it. Both are fine; leaving it undecided in November is not.

Barrel saunas
Smaller footprint than a hot tub, no water chemistry, and no standing running cost when it is off. Needs clearance from fences and a proper flue if wood-fired.
Ice baths & cold plunge
Cheap to buy and free to run - a tub of cold water. Take the health claims with caution and never plunge alone if you have a heart condition.
Water features for sound
The underrated one in a terraced garden: moving water masks traffic and neighbours far better than you would expect, for very little money or space.
Pools, briefly
In a small UK garden, a pool is a large object you can use for about eight weeks a year. An above-ground pool that comes down in September is usually the honest answer.

Safety with children
A locking, rigid cover is the only thing that counts. Any open water in a garden used by small children needs to be genuinely inaccessible when unsupervised.
For supervised swimming, a float vest such as the Gogokids Swim Vest helps young children build confidence - but it is never a substitute for an adult watching or a locked cover.
